The man who could not read

In the mid 60’s, a young man worked as a gatekeeper at a factory. It was a quiet job, not so well paid, but he still enjoyed it a lot. Then one day a new CEO came to the company and decided that all employees had to be able to read in order to continue working at the factory. The young man could not read and he was soon discovered. After being fired, he went home to his small apartment and felt depressed. In order to get some money, the young man began to manufacture small candlesticks of cast iron. He worked in his parents’ garage, where he had previously made such candlesticks for friends and acquaintances. It fell out well and after some time he could live with the same standard he had when working as a gatekeeper. Over time, his company grew and he developed more design of candlesticks, lamps and also furniture. After fifteen years he had built up a large company with twenty employees and a large factory building. He had still not learned how to read and one day when he had a meeting with his accountant, going through the financials the accountant discovered that the successful business owner couldn’t read.

– But, you can’t read, said the accountant!

– ”That’s right,” the man replied!

– And look how far you have come in life!

– Have you ever thought about what you could achieved if you could read? the accountant asked!

– “Yes I have” the man replied, I would be a gatekeeper at the factory…..
